The Polonia Teachers’ Centre in Lublin – training Polonia and Polish-speaking teachers

The Polonia Teachers’ Centre (Polonijne Centrum Nauczycielskie) in Lublin is an educational institution called into being by the Minister of National Education in 1991. It has as its task to extend substantive and methodological support to teachers outside Poland who teach the Polish language, or else other subjects in that language.

On January 1st 2011, by virtue of Ordinance No. 35 of the Minister of Education dated November 24th 2010, the Polonia Teachers’ Centre in Lublin was brought within the Group of Schools for the Children of Polish Citizens Temporarily Residing Abroad (Zespół Szkół dla Dzieci Obywateli Polskich Czasowo Przebywających za Granicą) with its seat in Warsaw. The new institution formed in this way goes by the name of the Centre for the Development of Polish Education Abroad (Ośrodek Rozwoju Polskiej Edukacji za Granicą, ORPEG), with its seat also in Warsaw. The Teachers’ Centre continues to be located in Lublin.

When we hear word of ”Polish-language education outside Poland ", what probably comes into our heads are educational institutions similar to those in Poland, with pupils, staff and a building in which classes take place. But such a traditional way of thinking about schools is too narrow when faced with the many different ways in which young Poles living in other countries actually gain tuition in the Polish language. The differences arise from the different legal statuses associated with education in different countries, the presence or absence of local financial support for schools, the available teaching facilities and resources (including qualified Polish-speaking teachers), access to collections of Polish books and sources, and so on. But while it is true that the Polish schools abroad operate via a wide range of organisational forms, thanks to the commitment and exceptional determination to overcome barriers displayed by teachers, heads and parents alike, Polish education is made a real possibility all over the world. It is obviously the aim and desire of ORPEG-PCN to do what it can to help with this process.
